This book focuses on learning the short vowel /e/ sound like in pets. A boy named Tom has ten chickens that get out of their cage and he has to use a net to catch them. The illustrations are colorful and relay the message that the book is trying to get across, for this reason I would rate it a 4 out of 5.

The short e vowel sound is very tricky for new readers, who will sometimes read the i or a sound instead of the short e in words. The more opportunities for practice the students have, the more likely they are to get the sound down. This would be a good addition to a classroom library.
